Diagnostic Imaging Referral Requirements 


  • Osteoarthritis hip- AP/lateral x-ray
  • Osteoarthritis knee- Weight bearing & sphere view knee x-ray
  • Foot (example: bunion)- Weight bearing foot x-ray
  • Osteoarthritis shoulder- AP/lateral/axillary shoulder x-ray
  • Recurrent  shoulder dislocation (traumatic)- MRI arthrogram shoulder
  • Rotator cuff injury- MRI or ultrasound shoulder
  • ACL Injury- MRI knee
  • Other soft tissue knee injuries- Ultrasound or MRI knee


*There is no indication for a MRI in degenerative osteoarthritis for hips and knees


*All imagining studies not performed in Alberta and not available in Netcare or Connect Care need to be supplied to the patient, in CD format


*Any imaging should have been completed within 1 year from date of referral
